    Abstract

    The pomfret, Formio niger, Pampus arganteus, Pampus chinensis together contribute 0.5-1.0% to the total marine production of the Dakshina Kannada district. Among these F. niger is the most important forming more than 80% of the total pomfret catches. A heavy catches amounting to 207t, 161t and 377t were recorded at Malpe during October, 1986, September, 1987 and November, 1990 respectively and 855.5t at Mangalore in October 1990.
