Abstract
The Kundapur estuary, an important clam landing area, became a good resource by the verdict of lime shell production from clam shell. The dredge, “machine”, used for the collection of shell deposits were described and its operation, by a pair of boats, were elucidated. The total production of shells varies from 150 to 175 tonnes per day and each tonne worth 85-100 rupees and the major consumer is polyfibre industry. About 450 people are employed practically throughout the year for the shell collection.This study also recommends to take regulatory measures for preventing the adverse effects due to extensive operation of dredges
