    Abstract

Donax cuneatus, papularly known as wedge clam small multicolored mollusa occurring in dense population in the intertidal zone of the three exposed sandy beaches of the Madras coast namely Marina, Thiruvanmiyur and Mahabalipuram- The population density of the dams in the three beaches was studied from July 1982 to August 1984. The Marina beach supports a population 16 times greater in size and 14 times more dense compared to Mahabalipuram; 2.5 times ereatar in size and 2-3 times as dense as that of Thiruvanmiyur. Among the various environmental parameters studied beach slope seems to play s significant role in the distribution and abundance of D. cuneatus.
