Abstract
The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-CMFRI), Kochi, has served since its inception as the country's pioneer national establishment for marine fisheries research. As part of its continuing effort to disseminate scientific information, the Institute first published a code list of common marine living resources of Indian seas in 1983, and released a substantially revised version in December 2000, comprising 1608 entries (1023 identified to species level and 585 to genus level) arranged by Group, Subgroup, Family, Genus and Species. In the years since, considerable advances have taken place in marine taxonomy, with many established genera, families and species undergoing revision, reclassification or synonymy. Alongside this, the range of resources routinely encountered in commercial marine fishing operations along the Indian coast has itself widened. It was felt necessary, therefore, to undertake a comprehensive revision of the code list, one that would not only correct and update nomenclature but also reorganise the entire scheme along strict taxonomic lines. The present code book is a result of this exercise.
