Abstract

In September 2025, during routine visits to fish landing centres, researchers from the ICAR- CMFRI observed two instances of incidental entanglement of the Widenose guitarfish, a species protected under Schedule I of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, following the 2022 amendment, due to a significant decline in its population. These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges in conserving such vulnerable species and the crucial role of awareness among the fisher communities.
