Abstract

The year 2025 marked a significant phase in the continued advancement of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute as a national leader in marine fisheries research, innovation, and policy support. The Institute’s contributions reflect a seamless integration of scientific rigour, technological advancement, and stakeholder engagement, aligned with India’s vision of a resilient and sustainable Blue Economy. Through its headquarters in Kochi and a network of regional centres, research stations, and Krishi Vigyan Kendras, the Institute addressed key domains including fisheries assessment, mariculture, biodiversity, climate change, ecosystem health, genetics and genomics, and socio-economic development, thereby strengthening evidence-based governance and sectoral resilience. Marine fisheries monitoring, supported by a robust sampling framework, estimated India’s marine fish landings at 3.57 million tonnes in 2025, representing a 3% increase over the previous year. The sector contributed `69,254 crore at the landing centre level and `97,702 crore at the retail level, with a Gross Value Added of `48,585 crore. Marketing efficiency improved to 70.88%, reflecting strengthened value chains and improved price realisation. Sectoral trends in the landings indicated an increase in mechanised fisheries, while motorised and non-mechanised sectors showed a relative decline. Regional variations were evident, with significant growth in some states and declines in others, largely influenced by climatic events. Emerging mesopelagic resources (200–1000 m depth) demonstrated promising potential, particularly due to their high mineral and DHA/ EPA content, offering prospects for nutraceutical and feed applications. These assessments, combined with economic analyses, provided critical insights for informed resource management and policy support.
