Abstract

The National Fisheries Policy 2020 (NFP) of India has stressed need to reach a vibrant blue economy driven growth target of around US$11–12 billion of marine fish exports, increasingly focussing on a diverse basket of processed, higher-value seafood. For this, investments in developing facilities like hatcheries, offshore cage farms, Recirculatory systems, depuration and processing infrastructure for value addition, product branding and traceability processes are vital. The bivalves which have a high niche market potential in domestic and export markets are likely to benefit from the India’s first multi-species mollusc hatchery: technology developed by ICAR-CMFRI. It gives hope to mussel farmers frequently struggling with an erratic wild seed supply chain to shift to a regular supply of quality hatchery produced mussel seed for farming. Fisheries Management Plans are crucial for sustainable fisheries and require a strong foundation of data on the numerous fishery resources in all regions of the Indian EEZ. The current issue of MFIS highlights these aspects along with several notes of interesting observations from the marine fisheries sector.
