Abstract

Producing more food from the same area of land while reducing the environmental impacts requires what has been called sustainable intensification wrote Godfray et al.(2010) in a recent review about the challenge of feeding 9 billion people. Todate, most land - based production of species of major commercial importance , like : catfish, hybrid striped bass, trout, tilapia, etc., has b een in ponds, raceways, or estuarine impoundments. Traditional production practices of these and other species require large amounts of good quality water, a limited resource in many areas. In our modern world the condition of many water sources in some areas no longer favors these production practices.
