    Abstract

The value of setting research and science-based priorities for conservation of marine mammals has been emphasized in India in the last few years. Results from prioritized research agenda is essential to provide timely, accurate, and cost-effective advice to managers on status and trends of marine mammal populations. Research needs to be directed towards providing fundamental baseline information on marine mammal populations and their ecosystems, in addition to assessing the impacts and risks posed by human activities such as fishing, pollution, habitat degradation and climate change. The need to maintain and strengthen stranding programmes in order to provide data on numbers and causes of marine mammal deaths; patterns of strandings, diseases, and health of marine mammals has also been realized. To set these research agenda, it is necessary to foster expanded and advanced research activities by improving collaboration between multiple agencies and achieve increased efficiencies. To discuss the priorities mentioned above, a workshop “Advancements in Research for Marine Mammal Conservation in India” has been organized as a side-event of XVI Agricultural Science Congress in Hotel Le Meridien, Kochi on 13.10.2023 at 10:30 - 13:00 hrs.
