    Abstract

The genesis of this work was a meeting convened by MoEF&CC in July 2021, to discuss the fisheries category under the Environmental Performance Index (EPI), a key aspect of the Global Indices Dashboard, which is used for computing Global and India Index Parameters. During this meeting, representatives of ICAR-CMFRI felt that the Fish Stock Status (FSS) as enshrined under the Global Index would not do justice as an appropriate indicator of the multi-species, multi-gear, multi-fleet marine fisheries of India. It was felt that an alternate index would be needed that rightly captures India’s performance in marine fisheries. This paved the way for ICAR-CMFRI to work on an alternate form of the EPI which would be an appropriate index measuring the fish stock health of Indian marine fisheries. Dr. A. Gopalakrishnan, Director, ICAR-CMFRI formed an expert committee, which based on the review of the model indices suggested by NITI Ayog/ MoEF&CC, FSS, Fish Caught by Trawling (FGT) and Marine Trophic Index (MTI) developed an EPI – FSS index for India which is introduced in this publication. This book is laid out in a manner that the reader is taken from the easiest method of analysing fish stock health to more sophisticated, data-intensive methods, finally setting the stage for the EPI–FSS index. The book then ends with a conclusion section on how this index can be used for effective management of the country’s marine fish resources
