Abstract
Karnataka with a coastline of 300 km spread over three districts is known for its diverse marine fishery resources. Known popularly as the ‘mackerel coast’, is endowed with an abundance of finfishes viz., mackerel, sardines and anchovies. Karnataka contributes more than 10% to the marine fish production of the country. With development in fishing operation and extension of fishing grounds, species composition of fish landed during last few years along Karnataka Coast has changed considerably, with emergence of new resources. These changes in species composition demanded proficient guidance in identification of the exploited resources to species level and there were lot of queries from various sectors involved in fisheries education, fisheries research and fisheries administration for an informative “Handbook”. The scientists of Mangalore Research Centre of CMFRI collected and collated 441 species of finfishes belonging to 122 families into a taxonomically oriented illustrative compendium. This publication includes information documented at the Research Centre under various project for past 10 years.
