Abstract
On-bottom culture of Villoritrr c!prinoiclr,v at four stockingdensities, vt. 500. 1000,2000and 3000 per sq.m was carried out in the Vemhnad Lnke. Seed clams of length of I I to 15mm weighing 0.4 to I gm werecollected from the natural bed and grown for a period of one year. Varii~tionisn the growtll and survival rntes of clams in different stocking densities showed that these parameters are dependent on the initial stocking density. Based on the results, the optinium stocking density for maximum yield is given. The present practice of relaying (semiculrure) of seed clams by fishern~n to suitable grow-out areas for augmenting production is described. Prospects for developing black clam culture on scientitic in lines in Vembanad Lake is discussed.
