Abstract
The chromosome number (n = 14, 2n = 28) of the Indian pearl oyster Pinctada fucata (Gould) is reported for the first time. It conforms with *he chromosome number reported for P. fucata martensii from Japan and P. imhricata from the Atlantic. It is suggested that, as in the cases of Crassostrea spp., genus ; Pinctada may exhibit conservativeness in chromosome number.
