Abstract
From the order of a 1000 tonnes in 1973 the cephalopod production has risen to the order of 43,000 tonnes in 1986. With aimed fishing, it is certainly possible to increase production of squids and cuttlefishes from the presently exploited zone. Under the aegis of the Marine Products Export Development Authority certain actions have been initiated in this direction in the recent past at experimental fishing level. Going by the data of soma of the chartered fishing vessels that operated in the Indian waters during the last five years, squid and cuttlefish resources in the neritic waters appear to be substantial.
