Abstract
Reef fishes with their brilliant colours and morphological peculiarities have always fascinated aquarium keepers. lt is estimated that 1.5-2.0 million people world wide keep marine aquaria, and the value of annual marine ornamental trade is estimated to range between US$ 200 - 330 million. More than 98% of the marine ornamental fishes marketed are wild collected from coral reefs of tropical countries. Destructive and non selective methods used to capture fish raises conservation issues, and there has been a long-running debate about the positive and negative aspects of collecting ornamenta! fishes from wild. This pressure can be taken off wild populations by supplying tank-bred,'rather than wildcaught, fish for the aquarium market. Marine fish have always been more difficult to rear successfully in captivity than freshwater ones. The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) has been intensifying research for the past one decade on the seed production technologies and has successfully developed and standardised the packages and practices for a dozen species which are in high demand in the marine ornamental fish trade.
