Abstract

The ribbon fishes of the family Trichiuridae are represented by three genera and four species in Indian waters (James 1959) and are the subject of one of the important commercial fisheries. The genus Eupleurogrammus Gill is represented by two species namely E. intermedius (Gray) and E. muticus (Gray). The other two genera are monotypic, represented by Trichiurus lepturus Linnaeus and Leputracanthussavala (Cuvier). The most recent revision places the genus Eupleurogrammus under the subfamily Lepidopodinae and the latter two genera under the subfamily Trichiurinae, of the family Trichiuridae (Tucker, 1956).
