Abstract
The immune system of crustaceans has been studied in detail in only a limited number of species. There are some immune resp-ollse systems that have been investigated intensively, such as the prophenoloxidase activating system (proPO), clotting, and phagocytosis. These investigations have led to unifying concepts based on molecular data from a variety of species. However, a comprehensive mechanistic approach to unravel the defense system of invertebrates is only possible when complete genomes, expressed genes and suitable disease challenge models are available. The crustaceans belong to the Arthropoda, which includes the insects.
