    Abstract

The growth of our knowledge of osmotic and ionic regulation in invertebrates can be traced from a series of excellent reviews available on the subject (Gurney, 1913; Schlieper, 1930, ’35; Dakin & Edmonds, 1943, ‘57; Panikkar, 1950; Prosser et al, 1950; Ramsay, 1954; Robertson, 1957, ‘60a; Shaw, 1960c; Nicol, 1960; and Lockwood, `1962). It is common knowledge that penetration of brackish waters or regions of lower salinity has been accomplished by several marine animal phyla including the polychaetes. Though predominantly marine, a few like the Nereids have successfully established themselves in regions where changes in salinity and temperature are usual (Zenkevich, 1957; Hartman, 1960; Smithy, 1963). Yet others like the Glycerids and the Nephthids, have been reported from fresh water (Wesenberg-Lund, 1958; Southern, 1931).
