Abstract

The status of pelagic fish production for ten years during 1985-94 was analysed. The total landings exhibited a slight decline from 1.22 million tonne in 1992 to 1.04 million tonnes in 1994, thus constituting 53 to 45% of the total marine fish production respectively. Traditional gears as well as innovative gears operated from motorised vessels were employed in the fishery. The catch trend, statewise production, seasonality and species composition of the major pelagic reSources and their biological characteristics are described and discussed in the present review.
