Abstract
It is well known that the European and American herring, pilchard, sardine, etc., make the largest contribution to the fisheries of the world, and are the mainstay of the economy of most of the European maritime nations. The French expression 'la crise sardiniere' is a measure of the disastrous effect of the failure of the fishery to the nation.
