Abstract

It has been the practice to credit dual authorship to the new names proposed by Cuvier and Valenciennes in their monumental contribution - to ichthyology, 'Histoire Naturelle Des Poissons', comprising of 22 volumes published from 1828-1849. Baron Cuvier passed away in 1832 while volume 9 was in press but Valenciennes who continued the work thereafter retained the name of his former senior colleague in the subsequent numbers of the series presumably as a mark of courtesy
