    Abstract

Among the commercial food fishes of the world, the clupeoid fishes (Class Teleostomi, Order Clupeiformes) are second to none, and the South American anchovy, European and American herrings, pilchards, sardines, etc. make the largest contribution to the fisheries and form the mainstay of the economy of most of the maritime nations. In India, the clupeoids which contribute about a third of the marine fish production, are chiefly represented by the sardines, anchovies and white-baits.
