Divergent opinions have been expressed in the past regarding the age of the Indian oil- sardine.'-" Recent work on some Indian fishes has shown that the scales can be used for age- determination. A detailed study of the scales of the oil-sardine was, therefore, undertaken to see the extent to which they could be utilized for determining the age of the fish,
