    Abstract

Results of a study of the biology and fishery of the giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii de Man in Central Kerala during the years 19S9-1963 are reported. The common methods of fishing, annual trends in production, effort and catch rate and monthly fluctuations in the fishery are discussed. Using the length frequency data from the various centres, the age and growth of the two sexes contributing to the fishery have been studio. Males are found to grow slightly more than females. Among females, 1-year classes are very rare, whereas among males they are common. Females are not usually found surviving far into the second year of life.
