Abstract

Coringa, the second largest mangrove ecosystem in India, supports rich fisheries comprising a variety of finfishes and shellfishes that provide a vital source of income for the dependent population.Yet, this rich ecosystem faces mounting issues and threats that degrade the health of the ecosystem and fisheries. These issues are being addressedfor more than three decades using conventional management approaches.Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) is a broader and more inclusive approach that considers the ecosystem as a whole is a practical and effective means to manage fisheries holistically. Recognising this, the Bay of Bengal Programme Inter-Governmental Organisation (BOBP-IGO) identified the Coringa Mangrove Ecosystem Fishery as the Fishery Management Unit (FMU) to implement EAFM under the Bay of Bengal Large Marine Ecosystem Project Phase II (BOBLME II). ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) was identified as the operational partner for preparing EAFM plan.
