Abstract

The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute has issued a formal advisory confirming that tuna harvested from Indian coastal waters is safe for human consumption. The statement aims to address growing public concern following international reports regarding parasitic infestations in fish populations elsewhere in the world. The CMFRI's clarification follows recent media reports identifying parasitic infections in skipjack tuna. Those findings were based on a scientific study of fish populations in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Brazil. The institute emphasised that such regional data cannot be generalised to the fish stocks found within the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone.
