Abstract

Knowledge about DNA, the fundamental building block of life, has contributed significantly to the progress of society as a whole by enabling vital interventions to decipher, sustain, and regulate genetic functions across medicine, agriculture, veterinary sciences, and fisheries management. While the foundational principles of the genetic code have been understood for decades, the rapid evolution of DNA sequencing technologies - progressing from first-generation methods to high-throughput Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) platforms has fundamentally transformed modern biological research, making molecular information indispensable to successful fishery management programs and sustainable aquaculture ventures. With this in view, an ICAR Winter School was organized on "Genetic and Genomics Tools for Sustainable Aquaculture and Fisheries Management" at the Marine Biotechnology, Fish Nutrition and Health Division of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Kochi, from 15th January to 4th February 2025, with prestigious funding support from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi.
