Abstract

Lakshadweep's coral-rich lagoons provide ideal conditions for the breeding of marine ornamental fishes, especially clownfish and damselfish species. The ever-increasing demand for ornamental fish has necessitated the development of captive breeding techniques for these fish. The ICAR CIMFRI has developed the seed production technologies for around forty marine ornamental species. Promoting hatchery production of marine ornamentals would be the best option to ensure sustainable development of the sector. The ICAR CMFRI, through the R&D efforts at Mandapam, Vizhinjam and Headquarters, Kochi, has developed the captive breeding technology for around 40 species of marine ornamentals, which include the Clown fishes, Damsel fishes, Anthias Gobies, Designer clowns and ornamental shrimps
