Abstract

The green tiger shrimp, Penaeus semisulcatus, is a major commercial and economically viable fishery resource in Palk Bay, India. The region's fishery is unique, despite which researchers have not assessed the life history parameters and stock status of the species for the past three decades. Hence, the current study aims to investigate the present fishery pattern, biology, population characteristics, and stock status of P. semisulcatus from Palk Bay. Larger shrimps are caught by trawlers and have greater demand in international markets. Mini trawls and disco gill nets catch the smaller shrimp which are sold locally. Green tiger shrimp landings in Palk Bay were 7658 t (2022), with an average of 6493 t (2020-2022) contributing 57.6% to the total penaeid shrimp landings in Palk Bay, with an annual economic impact of 53 million US dollars. The trend in the landings of P. semisulcatus from single-day mechanised bottom trawls showed fluctuation, and the average landings were 5043 t, contributing 49% to the total penaeid shrimp landings. The region exports shrimp to Japan, the USA, China, and European countries through the Tuticorin port.
