    Abstract

Sewell (1940) erected the genus Tisbintra to receive a single female copepod which he obtained during the John Murray Expedition in a surface tow-netting in the Mankauri Harbour, Nicobar Islands. To my knowledge no other species has so far been added to this genus and the genotype itself, T. nankaurica Sewell, has never again been recorded (Dr. Sewell has confirmed this in a personal communication). The discovery of a new representative of this genus with many morphological deviations is, therefore, of interest; specially so, because of the light it throws on the systematic position of the genus. Below is given an account of the morphology and life history of a new copepod obtained from the Gulf of Mannar and identified as a species of Tisbintra Sewell. The occurrence of this species was first observed by Dr. S. Jones and it was at his instance that a detailed examination was undertaken. I have, therefore, much pleasure in naming the species T. jonesi.
