    Abstract

The handbook ‘Aquatic Exotics and Quarantine Guidelines’ has been prepared as a complementary document to the draft ‘National Strategic Plan for Aquatic Exotics and Quarantine’. The aim of both documents is to provide the framework to regulate the introduction of exotics and quarantine in the country.. This is very important in the wake of liberalization under World Trade Organisation (WTO) so that India is equipped to minimize the ecological and disease risks associated with the likely increased in introduction of live aquatic animals. The quarantine part of the present document is based on the output from Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)/ Network of Aquaculture Centres of Asia-Pacific (NACA) initiative in this regard as well as the work of Office International des Epizooties (OIE). For aquatic quarantine, there has been regional initiative like FAO-NACA programme and an international body responsible(OIE). )On the other hand, there has been no separate inter-governmental initiative at the international level to draw up a code for introduction of aquatic exotics except for provisions under FAO code of conduct and Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
