Abstract

A myxozoan, Myxobolus sp. was found to infect the kidney of cultured freshwater fish, Labeo Rohita(Hamilton) collected from two fish farms from Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh states of India. The parasite showed 80% prevalence. No external cyst-like structures were noticed in the kidney. Squash preparations of kidney showed large number of plasmodia with developmental stages and fully-developed spores. Histological sections of kidney showed the infection in the interstitium, tubular epithelium and lumen. No severe inflammatory response was noticed in the infected kidney. Myxobolus cysts with degenerated spores and melanin deposition were frequently found. Parasite showed strict site-specificity.
