Abstract

Fishery for the short neck clam Paphia malabarica sustains the livelihoods of around a thousand fishers in Ashtamudi Lake. Commercial fishing for P. malabarica in this area began 30 years ago and because of sustainable management practices adopted by the stakeholders, it became India’s first Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified fisheries in 2014. The Kayamkulam Lake situated nearby supports a seasonal fishery of P. malabarica during June to September.
