    Abstract

Pearl spot, Etroplus suratensis, locally known as Karimeen, is one of the most important cultivable finfish in Kerala. In India, wild populations of pearl spot have been recorded from the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal. A fully grown fish can reach about 40 cm length and weigh about one and half kilogram. Though a brackishwater fish, it is also found in freshwater reservoirs, lakes and rivers but its breeding is limited in freshwater.
