Abstract
Of the marine fish landings of 2.6 million metrictons in 1994-1995 in India , the penaeid prawns, which mainly contribute to precious foreign exchange are steady at 1,73,000 metrictons. Thus, a quantity of 51,000 mt in 1978 -1979 and 57,800 mt in 1989-1990, has almost doubled, expanding our cash reserves through export of this very important commodity. An important factor, contributing to this major improvement was the role played by aquaculture or more precisely, its metaphor, the brackish water shrimp culture which is synonymous to the Blue Revolution, and its rise into an industry.
