Abstract

Availability of required quantities of high quality juveniles at the right time and at reasonable cost is the prime requirement for successful commercial fish farming. Any failure to obtain the right seed in quantity and quality at the right time, the production plans will not be attained. Thus, it has long been internationally recognized that a good source of juveniles is the most important prerequisite for fish farming. Most of the worlds fish aquaculture still depend on the fry almost comes exclusively from wild. Seed supply from the wild is often unpredictable and seasonal. Controlled hatchery production of seeds of economically important finfish ensures a steady supply of quality seeds for aquaculture operations. For a successful hatchery production of marine fin fishes, number of factors have to be considered. In the following sections advances in fish hatchery management particularly in the areas of brood management, induced spawning and larval rearing will be reviewed.
