    Abstract

The slow onset of the South-West monsoons this year, and the resulting deficit in rainfall, have been a source of worry to the maritime states in India. The state of our preparedness for a deficit monsoon, its impacts on marine fisheries and strategies to mitigate these effects has been the topics of scientific discussion during this period. The formation of mud banks along the south west coast of India, during the monsoons, plays a critical role in fisheries along the Kerala coast. CMFRI has initiated an interdisciplinary programme, in collaboration with the National Institute of Oceanography, to further our understanding of this phenomenon. F.V. Silver Pompano undertook weekly mud bank cruises during this period.
