    Abstract

For an informed management regime to ensure sustainability of the marine fisheries, it is essential not only to have reliable information on the status of marine fish resources along with fishing effort expended but also the number of fishing villages, landing centres, fisherfolk population, their occupation status, fishing crafts, fishing gears and other related parameters. With this objective, the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI), Cochin has been conducting frame surveys at periodic intervals. Marine fisheries census on an all India basis was last conducted by CMFRI during May - July, 1980. Since the last census, the marine fisheries in India have witnessed both qualitative and quantitative changes. Post 1980 was also been a period where a number of management/policy interventions were made by the Government of India and the maritime states for ensuring sustainability, conservation of resources and to protect the interests of artisanal fishermen
