    Abstract

Statistical inference is a set of mathematical means and procedures which is used to draw conclusions and generalizations about a population on the basis of data obtained from a sample of that population. There are two basic branches of statistical inference: estimation and testing of hypothesis. The estimation process does the inference of unknown parameters that characterize the population and the testing of hypothesis is the evaluation of hypothesis about one or more populations based on the evidence provided by the data. Depending on the questions being asked, the estimation and testing can be distinguished. For eg., what is the value of something ? - This would entail estimation. Are the two things the same?. This would require testing of hypothesis.
