    Abstract

We typically focus on equity and equality of both men and women in the gender mainstreaming archetype, which is manifested through empowerment. This chapter demonstrates how to quantify this empowerment parameter in the context of Self Help Group experiences and observations (SHGs). Self-Help Groups (SHG), is the grass-roots institution for improving women's living conditions on various social, political, and economic dimensions, and it plays a critical role in achieving women's empowerment in our country. Empowerment is the process by which women become progressive and, as a result, increase their self-reliance to assert their independent right to choose and control over their possessions and resources. This would help them challenge and eliminate the factors that oppress them. For illustrative purposes, women's empowerment is operationally defined in this chapter as the difference in the extent of enablement level of women before and after the formation of SHG. It is further subdivided into various sub-dimensions such as self-esteem, confidence, decision-making pattern, capacity building, psychological empowerment, social empowerment, economic empowerment, and political empowerment.
