    Abstract

GIS based inventory of marine fish landing centres along Indian coast is one of the deliverables under the ICAR-CMFRI all India project, titled “GIS based resource mapping of finfish and shellfish resources along Indian coast”. The basic objective for the inventory isto generate physically verified data on GIS coordinates for fish landing centres fromwhich resource mapping of fishing grounds, on the basis of direction and distance, could be accomplished. The information compiled in this document was collected by27 Scientists,63 Technical staff and several Research scholars of ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute. In this extensive survey, the team collected information on 1,278 landing centres along the Indian coast spanning all maritime States (Gujarat, 129; Maharashtra, 149; Goa,34; Karnataka, 93; Kerala, 201; Tamil Nadu, 359; Andhra Pradesh, 204; Orissa,54 and West Bengal,55). It is a known fact that traditional landing centers, especially beach landing centres, are being relocated, merged or discontinued by the influence of natural and anthropogenic interventions. Sea erosion is the major climate related factor, which leads to relocation or closure of landing facilities in many villages.Developmental activities being implemented in the coastal region, lack of profitability from fishing operations, mechanization and improved landing facility in nearby harbours were the major anthropological reasons for the reduction of number of landing centres. The active number of landing centersfound during the present verification was lower than that collected during the 2010 census. This document “GIS based inventory of marine fish landing centres and fishing operations along Indian coast asa baseline information for marine spatial planning” is custom made for the Indian Navy,so as to aid their Marine Spatial Planningprogrammes. The information incorporated in the document includes the name of the landing centre, name of the district, its location with latitude and longitude (GPS reading), gears operated from the landing centre, seasonality of each gear operation and distance covered for fishing from the landing centre. This information will bevery useful in understanding the fishing related activities in coastal waters along the Indian coast.
