Abstract

The training started on 17 October 2013. The purpose of the training was to analyse the fish landings from the Indian coast in the context of the large-scale ecological structure of the surrounding seas. Three approaches are adopted to estimate the marine fisheries potential of Indian EEZ, that adopted statistical and productivity methods, either separately or jointly. The statistical approach provides qualitative details on distribution of marine fishery resources using fish landing data. Using ocean colour data, the productivity approach is independent of data on marine fish landings. A combination of both methods reconciles the estimates to give a value which is considered to be a reference potential for estimation of fleet size (Working group 2012). The estimate can be lower or higher than the actual potential, given the compromises made in the selection and types of the approaches.
