    Abstract

    Studies on these fragile ecosystem are scanty and the few available w ere relatively of recent attempts . But the far sighted and the intelligent local elders transplanted the sea grass beds to many of the Northern islands for controlling the erosion in the 1950s itself. The elderly locals even now call them Kavarattipullu as it was introduced from Kavaratti lagoon.
