Abstract

Prawns form an important constituent of the marine fish resources of the country. The average annual landing of penaeid prawns during the year 1989 was 1,46,753 t which attained 2,14,741 t in 1998 and 2,32,327 t in 2009. The postlarvae of most of the penaeid prawns migrate from the sea towards the shallow inshore and estuarine regions and settle down to the bottom, adopting a benthic habit.
