Abstract
While working on the coral collections of the lndian Museum, Calcutta, MATHAI (1924) found only a single species from the Nicobars and that is Hydnophora exesa. While summing up the available data on the distribution of coral genera in the Indian Ocean, ROSEN (1971) in a recent paper listed only three genera viz. Porites, Goniopora and Hydnophora from the Nicobars along with Acropora, Pocillopora and Turbinaria as sight records and Montipora as doubtful sight record. However, according to ROSEN 'S figure 1 about 40 genera should be found here; the adjoining coral region of the Andamans shows 24 genera, the Mergui Archipelago 37 genera. The above review of literature ind icates that there exists a great dearth of knowledge of the corals of the Nicobar Islands
