Abstract
Fisheries and Aquaculture have been recognized as a powerful income and employment generator as it stimulates the growth of a number of subsidiary industries. It is an instrument for the livelihood for a large section of economically backward population of the country. Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food sectors in the world with a impressive growth rate of over eight per cent annually. Over the past three decades, there has been a rapid progress in aquaculture development all over the world, particularly in Asian countries. The major changes that are noticeable indicate the transformation from a small scale homestead level activity to a large scale commercial aqua farming.
