Abstract
The clupeoid fishes are second to none in the commercial fisheries of India and they contribute more than a third of the total marine fish production of the country. The sardines, hilsa, anchovies, whitebaits, etc, are the more important fishes of the group which support the very rich fisheries of our waters. Many other closely related clupeoid fishes also form valuable fisheries along both the east and west coasts and their identification in the field is difficult even .for the specialist.
