Abstract
Prawn farming has assumed considerable importance all over the world as an alternate means of increasing prawn production. In many countries it has been taken up on industrial level and more and more water areas are brought under scientific farming. The present global shrimp production through aquaculture is estimated at about seven lakh tonnes from a total cultivated area of about 10 lakh hectares (Anon., 1991a). In India, the annual prawn production through aquaculture amounts to about 35,000 tonnes which is obtained exclusively by culturing in brackishwater systems.
