Abstract
In their monograph Brooks and Brooks (1947) have discussed the degree of permeability in blue-green algae which can withstand relatively concentrated brines whose osmotic pressures are about 150 atmospheres. They observe that these cells are permeable to water in both directions in response to the osmotic forces. But no quantitative data are given to substantiate the statement and to explain the various physiological changes taking place in the algal cells under varying salinity conditions.
