Abstract
The brown mussel Perna indica is one of the two species occurring in India, but with a narrow distribution along the extreme south-west coast. The inadequacy of mussel seed in the wild is one of the constraints for taking up commercial mussel farming. Initial success has been achieved in the artificial breeding of the brown mussel and spat have been raised in the laboratory.
